This scrapbook portrays education, history, and people in Lancaster County through newspaper clippings. Education is represented through a series of newspaper articles discussing one-room schoolhouses, Muhlenberg High School, Lancaster High School and McCaskey High School. The articles refer to building improvements and standardizing education. Articles containing information about local and state history are abundant throughout the book. Information concerning the Ephrata Cloister, Penn Square, Wheatland, Conestoga Wagons, wagon trails, railroads and the bicentennial are only a few of the history subjects available. Many well-known Lancastrians are mentioned such as Thaddeus Steven, Baron Henry William Stiegel, General Edward Caswell Shannon, General John A. Sutter, William Uhler Hensel and the Steinmans.

Lawyer from Pennsylvania who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1859 and served as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. After the war, he led the Radical Republicans, opposing both Lincoln and then Andrew Johnson, endorsing military occupation of the South.
